I went to a GoodWill thrit store Thursday evening (green and yellow tags were 50% off) and it was an hour before closing time. I knew I needed to make the most of my time there so I was moving a bit quickly – no dilly dallying going on tonight!
CDs & DVDs
I decided to not look at the book section. The first section I hit was the CD area and I pulled out anything that happened to still be sealed in plastic shrink wrap. Perused the DVDs and didn’t find much.
Then onto the VHS tapes where most of them were marked $0.99 or $1.99 which ,to me, is quite expensive for VHS tapes. But then I saw it…
Sale – VHS Tapes – 10 for $1.00. Cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching. Usually when there’s this type of sale you have to buy 10 to get them for 10 cents apiece because they just want to get rid of them. So I went through and found any that still had shrink wrap on them and I put them in my cart. I had 1 or 2 that were used tapes but kept them because they were nichey how-to topics .
Then I headed over to where they have all of their household items and some toys. Noticed one small rack of VHS tapes on the side and found one more sealed tape. (side note: I didn’t scan any of the VHS tapes to check saleability, I just went on instinct. If I found some duds then that is ok – I’m only out $0.10).
I glanced at the toys an walked through the rest of the area. It’s a pretty small section – 4 short aisles with shelves along the walls on 2 sides. So then I walk a little bit further in that area and they did have some toys but they’re all clearance items from Target (Paper Jamz).
What I find with those in my area is that they are usually overpriced. And for some reason the Goodwill writes in black permanent marker in big numbers on the front of the items. For some items this isn’t a big deal and I can get that marker off. But for others, like cardboard packaging, I can’t get it off. And also I find that target clearance items that make it to my Goodwills also make it to a lot of other places and the market for them is saturated on Amazon. So I generally don’t buy them.
I found a couple more items – one of which is a floor register cover. And I found some kind of teaching kits that include booklets and videos. Usually stuff about teaching and for teachers does well, so I put those in my cart too. None of them had barcodes so I looked a few up using the voice function – no other FBA sellers. Looked like I could sell them at around $35+ for a $3 item – not bad.
Next I walked by this area where they have record albums. I have never bought any record albums to sell on Amazon (yes, I’m old enough to have actually bought record albums/LPs to listen to and 45s !)
Then I pulled my cart over to the side and went through it. I used FBA Scout to scan the CDs and ended up putting a few of them back.
Yes, that is MY actual cart in the pic.
I also had a 20% off coupon. The Goodwills around here give out a card that you get stamped with every purchase – 10 stamps = 20% off.
I’ll be processing and packing all my finds this weekend for shipment on Tuesday (I think UPS is closed for Monday – labor day).
I’ll update this post with my progress.
What I bought:
10 VHS tapes – NEW – $0.10 each
2 CDs – NEW – $1.99 each
5 Teaching kits – LN (vhs tapes with booklets) – $2.99 each
1 Book set – NEW $.50
2 DVD – U-VG – niche/ how-to – $2.99 each
1 Floor Vent – $3
Where I goofed:
1 of the “teaching kits” I bought did not have all of the pieces with it – missing the book. I was able to list the VHS tape separately for less money than if I had the complete kit.
Remember I said I had to buy 10 VHS tapes to get the 10/$1 deal? Well, I wasn’t expecting all of them to be salable on Amazon. 3 of them went into the “donate” pile.
Total amount of money spent: $31.48
Listed on Amazon for: $338.94
I am sure NOT complaining about that!
Side Note: I am still paying sales tax on my purchases which I should NOT be doing. I would’ve saved a couple of bucks on this past thrifting trip – and those couple of dollars could have gone to some pretty darn good inventory at the thrifts. Debra wrote a book about Sales Tax which I MUST sit down and read – can you believe I haven’ t read it yet? Silly – I know!
P.S. I’ll be posting some of these items as they sell in our “Thrifty Flip Alerts” – be sure and check ’em out!
